Gardner Rotary Club Focuses on Mental Wellness

The Gardner Rotary Club is off and running with another year of engaging and informative weekly programs. One area of special emphasis this year is mental wellness—an issue that touches nearly every family, workplace, and community.

Most of us know someone who struggles day to day with depression, anxiety, substance use, family conflict, or other mental health challenges. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than one in five U.S. adults lives with a mental illness. In 2022, that represented approximately 59.3 million adults, or 23.1% of the adult population.

To help our members better understand mental wellness and the resources available in our community, the Gardner Rotary Club has scheduled three programs on the topic before the end of 2026.

Dr. Amy Cain, Counseling Department Chair at MidAmerica Nazarene University, shared valuable information about the different levels of mental health needs and the warning signs that may indicate someone is struggling. Club members also heard from Tim DeWeese, Director of Johnson County Mental Health Center, who highlighted the wide range of mental health services and resources available throughout Johnson County.

In December, representatives from Cottonwood Springs in Olathe will continue the conversation with a program focused on suicide awareness, including current trends, warning signs, and resources available for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts and for those who care about them.

Mental wellness is a community issue, and meaningful change begins with open conversation, greater understanding, and a willingness to support one another. The Gardner Rotary Club encourages everyone to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. By learning the signs, knowing where to turn for help, and simply being willing to listen, each of us can make a meaningful difference—and potentially save a life.
