Recap of May Activities
Recently the Rotary Club of Leavenworth partnered with the Lansing Lions Club to collect OTC Meds and cash donations for our local Allways Community Health Center (formerly Saint Vincent Clinic). Overall, we had a great day --- we collected 612 OTC Medical items valued at approximately $2800.00 and over $500 in cash donations and two Dillon’s gift cards on the day; presentation of items/cash donations happened a couple of days later and the clinic staff was thrilled; to date (since 2013) these groups have collected over $78,000 in supplies and $13,500 in cash during our semi-annual drives for the Center/Clinic.
Rotary Park Clean Up started this month with weed management, trash pickup and flower planting; this will be a priority for us on a monthly basis until November; special thanks go out to our volunteers who helped this month with a special shout out to service project leads, Rick and Shari Hansen.
After a great presentation by part of the VA Domiciliary Staff this month, our club donated $500 towards their general operations in support of the Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program. These funds were earmarked from our Veterans' Day Pancake Breakfast proceeds. Each year our club participates in the JROTC Awards Ceremony at Leavenworth High School; the Rotary Club of Leavenworth presents a leadership award to a JROTC student who exemplifies exceptional leadership throughout the school year.
In an on-going effort to keep Mental Health Awareness at the forefront in our community, and in conjunction with our district's Mental Health Initiative, President Caroline and IPDG Tamara Sevcik have presented adult mental health awareness books to every school library in our surrounding area. Ten schools are now equipped with two copies of the youth and adult versions of "How Full is Your Bucket" and "The Energy Bus" to equip youth in our community and their parents with struggles they may face on occasion. Pictured here in the middle is the Librarian from Pleasant Ridge Elementary School, Tracy Weber. The purchase of these books, last year and this year, was made possible by a discretionary grant from our district grant committee (thank you, Greg Shondell & committee members).
