I'm excited to share that Larry Martin, who has served as District 5710's Vice Chair of the Membership Committee, has agreed to serve as District 5710's Co-Membership Chair in the 2026-2027 Rotary year. Larry has been a Rotarian for more than 20 years, first joining the Rotary Club of Valley Falls in 2002 before becoming a member of the Rotary Club of Leavenworth in 2007. Throughout his Rotary journey, he has demonstrated exceptional leadership, serving as Club President, Assistant Governor, District Vocational Service Chair, and most recently as District New Club Development Subcommittee Chair. Larry is an outstanding Rotarian with a deep passion for strengthening clubs, developing leaders, and expanding Rotary's reach through innovative membership strategies.
August marks Membership and New Club Development Month which is a time to reflect on how we grow Rotary and welcome others into our mission of service and fellowship.
Rotary is stronger when we expand in both numbers and diversity. That’s why this month, I encourage every club to think creatively about how we engage prospective members. Consider inviting a friend or colleague to a service project or social event. Sometimes all it takes is one meaningful moment to spark a lifelong connection to Rotary.
One exciting path for growth is through satellite or cause-based clubs. A satellite club allows a smaller group to meet independently while still being connected to a larger “sponsor” club. This flexibility is ideal for those with scheduling challenges or different meeting styles. Educators are one example of a community group that may embrace Rotary’s mission but find it difficult to attend traditional morning or noon meetings, making a satellite club an ideal, flexible option for their involvement.
Cause-based clubs, on the other hand, unite members around a shared passion such as the environment, veterans, literacy, or youth development. These clubs thrive on energy and purpose and often attract people who’ve never before considered Rotary. Are there individuals in your community who are already serving others, mentoring youth, leading clean-up efforts, championing literacy, mental and behavioral health, yet doing so independently, without the support, resources, and global network that Rotary offers? Imagine the impact if they were connected to Rotary’s mission and momentum.
If you’ve ever said, “I know someone who would love Rotary, but…” a satellite or cause-based model might be the answer.
Let’s make this month a launchpad for lasting connections and new beginnings!
